Aren't females better hunters/pets/family dogs than males?
Absolutely
not, although this is a very common misconception. Females can make excellent
hunting dogs, great companions, loving friends, and wonderful family dogs.
So can males in almost exactly the same proportion! In this breed, there
are no real distinctions in temperament or hunting ability between the
genders. If anything, females tend to be a bit more independent and stubborn
than males and most breeders will tell you that the best family pets tend
to be neutered males. Males neutered prior to puberty do not mark
(worry about marking is one reason people think they want a female.
) Even intact
males usually do not mark if they are properly housebroken. Please keep
an open mind and look at the individual Brittany, not just at gender!
How long do Brittanys
live?
The average is 13 years, but this can vary by several years on either
side
Are
Brittanys good pets even if no one in my household hunts?
Sure,
Brittanys are generally outstanding pets, but they do require regular,
active exercise! If there are no hunters in your family, consider taking
up an active sport or competitive activity that you can do with your Brittany
such as hiking, biking, jogging, agility trials, obedience training or
one of many others. The important thing to remember is that the ideal
Brittany family should have an active lifestyle that involves the dog.

I've heard that
Brittanys are very hyper! Is this true?
Brittanys
are very high energy dogs that require regular, daily exercise. Given
the proper amount of exercise, most Brittanys can live happily and calmly
in the house. There are a few Brittanys that are very mellow and laid
back by nature, but these tend to be the exception rather than the rule.
Before you select a Brittany, be sure you are ready to make a commitment
to getting regular, purposeful activity for the dog. See About
the Brittany
for more discussion.
